Ferrys depart from the mainland port of Kennacraig. They arrive at, and depart from, either Port Ellen or Port Askaig on the Isle of Islay.
You will need to book your ferry crossing, especially if you are bringing a vehicle.

Coaches depart from Glasgow and arrive at Kennacraig in time for the relevant ferry. They also depart Kennacraig, on the return journey, shortly after the ferry arrives from Islay.

Once on Islay buses are timed (mostly!) to take passengers to Bowmore and the other main villages from the ferry terminals.
Travelling by car you will need to get to the ferry terminal at Kennacraig on the mainland to catch the ferry. You are able to leave your car at Kenacraig but to get the best out of Islay it is recommended you bring it with you.
There are two companies on Islay where you can hire a car. It is usually possible to have your car waiting at the airport or ferry terminals, and you can leave it there when you leave.
